CHAPTER 05

Derek was frustrated and irate.

He was walking through the thoroughfares of Desire. In the past few days, he’d basically just been trying to live his life. He’d initially felt a lot better, handing his strange problem over to Venus and her tech team. They had gotten into his profile and were hunting. He tried to put it out of his mind, because he knew there wasn’t really anything he could do at this point, and get on with his life. He’d gotten a few more messages, and then, yesterday, they’d just stopped. And he hadn’t gotten another since.

Initially, he thought they’d discovered the problem, who was doing it, but then he noticed another surge in jobs he was getting. They had him busy, harried, and overworked. Normally he wouldn’t mind, but the list of jobs he was getting was ridiculous, and he couldn’t seem to actually get through to anyone above him. He still hadn’t been able to contact Naomi, who was still technically his supervisor. He’d sent her a few messages, but they’d gone unanswered. Stranger still, whenever he stopped by his actual place of work, no one seemed to be available. Either no one was around or they were too busy with their own works.

And that wasn’t even the weirdest part.

He hadn’t had sex with anyone but Anya since his encounter with Venus. Derek hadn’t even put together that something strange was going on until earlier today. He’d just gotten off of work and he’d caught the attention of a hot cyvit tourist and they’d started talking and flirting and he’d just about gotten to inviting her back to his apartment when she suddenly got a message that there had been some kind of problem with a payment she’d made earlier and would she please come deal with that problem immediately.

She’d apologized and given him her contact information, and had hurried off.

Derek had almost brushed it off, but watching her hurry away upset him more than it should have. And as he’d begun heading back home, taking the long way there instead of the tram, he’d realized, suddenly, that he wasn’t angry at her, or even at the situation that had called her away. He was angry because this was like the tenth time he’d gotten cock-blocked by a seemingly random event. And that thought had sparked others.

Seemingly random events.

And he’d thought back through the past several days. There had been the time he’d tried to get into the cyvit brothel, but there’d been a malfunction with the fire alarm that had shut the brothel down for awhile. Then there’d been that time he’d caught sight of a beautiful woman he intended to talk with, see if she was interested in sex, but the door leading out of the restaurant he’d been in had mysteriously malfunctioned, closing and locking for maybe two minutes before he got it open. By the time he had, she was gone.

He’d tried to hit up a strip club, but there had been a large malfunction with their thumbprint readers.
